Why Fall Kitchen Decoration Matters

The heart of any home is your kitchen. We spend more time during the fall cooking comfort food and baking pies. These moments are made more special when you create a warm, inviting atmosphere. The best part is? It’s not necessary to be an interior decorator or spend hundreds of pounds to create a stunning autumn kitchen.

1. Pumpkin Paradise in Your Kitchen Island

Pumpkin Paradise in Your Kitchen Island

Pumpkins have a way of bringing the fall season to life. I love to place different sizes and shapes of pumpkins, gourds, and other seasonal vegetables on my kitchen island. Mix real pumpkins in with the decorative ones to create a longer-lasting display. You can use white pumpkins to create a modern appearance, or you can go with the traditional orange ones.

How to make it: Arrange three or five pumpkins with varying heights, on a wooden platter. You can add dried corn, cinnamon sticks, and other autumnal decorations. This centerpiece looks amazing for less than 20 dollars.

2. Warm Autumn Colors through Kitchen Towels

Warm Autumn Colors through Kitchen Towels

Switching out your normal towels is the easiest way to bring fall into your kitchen. Towels in shades like burnt orange, mustard yellow or chocolate brown are ideal. These colors instantly warm your space.

I drape mine over my sink and hang one on the handle of my oven. The kitchen towels you find at dollar stores or any home store are beautiful and fall themed.

3. Rustic Wooden Cutlery and Accents

 Rustic Wooden Cutlery and Accents

Show off your wooden boards by displaying them on the counter, or leaning them against your backsplash. Wood brings a warmth and natural beauty to your fall decor.

You can also use wooden bowls to hold seasonal fruits, such as apples or pears. This is both a decorative item and a healthy option for snacking.

4. Fall Wreaths on Kitchen Windows or Cabinets

Fall Wreaths on Kitchen Windows or Cabinets

Wreaths can be used on any door, not just the front. A small wreath in the fall looks great hanging on a cabinet door or window. Choose one that has autumn leaves, mini pumpkins or berries.

I created my own wreath with a grapevine and hot-glued leaves from the craft shop. It cost me less than $15 and took me less than an hour. With this simple addition, your kitchen will feel much more cozy.

5. Candles with Autumn Scents

Candles with Autumn Scents

A must-have for fall is a candle that smells like the season. Aromas such as pumpkin spice and apple cider create a cozy atmosphere in the kitchen. Candles also create a warm, cozy atmosphere.

Place candles in your open shelves, on your tabletop, or on your countertop. For safety and to make them look more polished, I prefer candles in glass jars.

6. Seasonal Kitchen Art and Signs

Seasonal Kitchen Art and Signs

You can easily add fall signs to your kitchen wall. You can find inexpensive signs that say “Gather,” ‘Thankful,’ “Hello Fall,” “Pumpkin-Spice Everything,” or other phrases.

Make your own with a wooden board, some paint and some creativity. It can be hung above the kitchen table, or on a blank wall. This small detail can create a wonderful autumnal atmosphere.

7. Mason Jar Fall Fillers

 Mason Jar Fall Fillers

Mason jars make for great fall decorations. Fill them up with candy corn or dried beans in colors of fall, acorns and even fairy lights.

I place three or four jars of mason on my windowsill. I like to add burlap ribbons around the lid of my jars for a rustic farmhouse feel. These jars add charm and beauty to any kitchen.

8. Table runners in plaids and checks

Table runners in plaids and checks

Instantly transform your island or table with a table runner that is fall-colored. You can find buffalo check or plaid in neutral tones, such as orange, brown and cream.

You can also layer your runner by adding other decorative items like candles or small pumpkins. This gives your display depth and a more professional appearance. Table runners can be used year after season, which makes them an excellent investment.

9. Fresh or Faux Fall Florals

Fresh or Faux Fall Florals

Bring in mums or sunflowers. Or fall foliage arrangements. While fresh flowers are beautiful, good quality fake flowers will last throughout the season.

A vase of autumn flowers can be placed on your kitchen countertop or table. To give a farmhouse feel, I use galvanized containers or vintage pitchers instead of regular vases.

10. Copper and Gold Metallic Accents

Copper and Gold Metallic Accents

Fall colors look stunning in metallic copper and gold. Change your standard kitchen items to copper canisters, bronze picture frames, or gold utensil holders.

This metallic touch will bring warmth and elegance to the fall kitchen decor. Two or three metallic items will do the trick.

11. Cozy kitchen rugs in fall colors

The new kitchen rug can change the entire feel of the room. Rugs in warm tones and patterns with autumnal themes like pumpkins or leaves are ideal.

The kitchen rugs can be very useful. They protect your floors and cushion your feet while you cook. Select machine-washable kitchen rugs to make cleaning easier during the busy season.

12. Open Shelving for Autumn

Style your open shelves in the kitchen with fall decor. Mix up your usual dishes with seasonal decor like small pumpkins and fall-colored cups or cookbooks.

I rotate my items on open shelves throughout the year. For fall, I bring out my orange-and-cream dishes, display some mini pumpkins, then open a beautiful cookbook with a recipe for the season.

Budget-Friendly Fall kitchen decor ideas

There’s no need to spend an arm and a leg to create the perfect fall kitchen. Here are my top money-saving tips.

Look around your home for items that work well with the fall. Find items that you already have in your home to use for the fall. Baskets, candles and wooden items are perfect.

Visit dollar stores. Every year, I find beautiful fall décor at dollar stores. They have a great selection and it is all so affordable.

Go outside. Nature provides free decorations. Collect pinecones. acorns. colorful leaves. Before bringing them indoors, make sure to clean and dry the items.

Make DIY decorations whenever possible. It is easy to make many fall decor items yourself. Save money by making mason-jar crafts, painted pumpkins and wreaths.

Colors for Fall Kitchens

The right color palette can make all the difference. Fall kitchens look great with these color combinations:

  • Autumn colours: Golden yellow, chocolate brown, and burnt orange
  • Modern Farmhouse: White, cream, natural wood tones with touches of rust-orange
  • Elegant Fall: Navy, copper, cream and burgundy
  • Neutral Autumn: Beiges, creams, grays, and natural textures

Choose a color palette that complements your kitchen. Add warm tones in any room.

How long can you leave your Fall decorations up?

I start decorating my home for fall in September and leave most of the decorations up until Thanksgiving. After Thanksgiving, I move on to winter and Christmas decor.

Many fall-inspired items are still useful into November or even December. The use of pumpkins, warm colors and natural elements is not limited to the fall season.

Small Kitchen? A small kitchen?

Even if your kitchen is small, you can still decorate for the fall. Simply keep it simple.

  • Use a single statement piece, such as a gorgeous fall wreath or centerpiece
  • Change your kitchen towels, and perhaps a rug
  • Add a few pumpkins on your windowsill
  • Display fall-scented candle on your counter

In small areas, less is better. Pick a few items that you love rather than trying them all.

Making Your Fall Kitchen Instagram-Worthy

Want to have your fall kitchen look great in photos? Want to make your fall kitchen look amazing in photos?

Keep the surfaces mostly free of clutter by using only a few important decorative pieces. Clutter doesn’t photograph well. If you can, try to use natural lighting. The morning light is beautiful near the windows. Make small vignettes and groupings instead of decorating everywhere.

Most importantly, your kitchen should make you feel good. Trends change, but an area that is a reflection of your personality and makes YOU happy will always be in style.

Final Thoughts

Decorating your kitchen to suit the season doesn’t need to be difficult or expensive. You can start with some simple changes such as a seasonal centerpiece and towels, then continue to add items that you enjoy. It’s important to create a welcoming, warm space in which you will enjoy spending your time this fall.

Decorate however you like. Some people like to decorate with pumpkins or harvest themes while others enjoy subtle touches. You should choose what makes you feel happy as you enter your home.
