Fall Bedroom Decor Ideas That Make Your Space Feel Warm and Beautiful

Fall Bedroom Decor Ideas

It’s autumn, which means it’s the perfect time to create a cozy, warm atmosphere in your bedroom. I have been decorating my bedroom for fall for many years. There’s just something magical about turning your sleeping area into a cozy retreat.

These fall bedroom decorating ideas can help you create a cozy, seasonal retreat in any bedroom.

Why Fall Bedroom Decor is Important

Let’s first discuss why seasonal decor makes a real difference. Your bedroom should be a place of personal retreat. As the days become shorter and cooler, having a cozy, warm space to retreat into is essential to your mental health.

Fall decorating does not require a room renovation. Changes in textures, colors and accents are all it takes to transform the mood of your bedroom.

1. How to Layer your Bedding Like A Pro

How to Layer your Bedding Like A Pro

It’s the easiest way possible to add fall-inspired vibes to your bedroom. Add layers after your base sheets.

This is my favorite bedding formula for the fall.

  • Warm tones in a lightweight duvet or quilt
  • Fold a chunky knitted blanket at the foot of your bed
  • Throws of faux fur or velvet draped in a casual manner
  • Throw pillows with 4-6 different textures

Mixing textures is the key. Mix linen, faux fur, knit and velvet. This will create a cozy, tactile feeling that is reminiscent of autumn comfort.

Don’t replace everything. Add one or two pieces in colors such as mustard yellow, burnt orange or deep burgundy.

2. Warm Color Palettes

Warm Color Palettes

Whites, blues and vibrant colors are popular in summer bedrooms. Fall is all about warm colors.

Color schemes for fall bedrooms:

  • Terracotta + cream + olive green
  • Burnt orange + Cognac Brown + Ivory
  • Deep burgundy + Mustard Yellow + Warm Gray
  • Soft white + Rust + Camel

Paint is not necessary. You can bring these colors into your home through pillows, blankets and rugs.

Recently, I helped my sister to update her neutral bedroom by adding terracotta throw pillows and a rust colored throw blanket. She spent less than 80 dollars and the transformation was amazing.

3. Add Textured Throw Cushions

Add Textured Throw Cushions

Throwing pillows can make a huge difference in the aesthetics of your bedroom for autumn. Here’s where you can play with textures.

Search for:

  • Velvet pillows with jewel tones
  • Chunky Knit Pillow Covers
  • Faux leather accents
  • Checkered or plaid patterns
  • Designs with embroidered or tasseled details

Mix and match the sizes. I like to use two large pillows (22 inches), two medium pillows (18 inches) and two accent pillows. This adds visual interest and dimension.

You can buy pillow covers rather than buying new pillows. You can change them every season, they’re easier to store and cheaper.

4. Use candles and string lights to create ambient lighting

Use candles and string lights to create ambient lighting

Autumn evenings require softer, more warm lighting. When you want to create a cozy environment, harsh overhead lights won’t do.

What works?

  • Warm-toned LED strings draped above headboard
  • Candles with batteries on nightstands
  • Himalayan Salt Lamp for Soft Orange Glow
  • Table lamps with a warm bulb (aim at 2700K).

Last year I installed dimmers in my bedroom, and they’ve been a game changer. It makes a huge difference to be able to adjust the lighting according to mood.

Candles with scents are also essential. Go for pumpkin spice, cinnamon apple, vanilla chai, or cedarwood. You want to be able to sleep well, so make sure the scents are not too strong.

5. Natural Elements

Natural Elements

Natural textures and elements are the perfect way to bring fall into your home. You can even get creative and DIY some decor.

Love these ideas:

  • Tall vase with dried pampasgrass
  • In a corner, branches with leaves of autumn
  • Nightstand with small pumpkins and gourds
  • Pinecones in a decorative bowl
  • Fall wreaths on the door or wall

I spray-paint branches that I find interesting on my walks in metallic gold, copper or silver. These look like expensive items but are actually free.

Tip for a nature walk: Collect fallen leaves and press them between two books. Then frame them. This is free art, but it looks sophisticated.

6. Upgrade Your Wall Decor

Upgrade Your Wall Decor

It’s not necessary to hang everything again, but adding a few pieces with a fall theme can bring the room together.

Simple wall decor ideas

  • Change bright pieces of art with warmer tones
  • Add a macrame hanging to your wall
  • Hang a seasonal wreath over your bed
  • Create a gallery with autumn prints
  • Add a mirror to a wooden or brass frame

Printing art on Etsy can be inexpensive and simple. Download, print in your local print shop and frame. I’ve done it multiple times and guests always think that I spent more than I actually did.

7. Layer Rugs to Keep Warm

Layer Rugs to Keep Warm

The cold floors can ruin a cozy autumn morning. Add a plush carpet or add layers of rugs to create instant warmth.

Layer a small, textured rug over an existing rug. This is especially effective with:

  • The bedside rug is a sheepskin rug
  • Vintage-style runners at the foot of your bed
  • Jute rug with soft shag at the top.

A good rug will make stepping out of your bed in the mornings when it’s chilly so much more pleasant, even if you are renting and cannot change the flooring.

8. Add a Cozy Nook for Reading

Add a Cozy Nook for Reading

Create a reading corner for fall if you even have a small space. It doesn’t need to be extravagant.

You need:

  • Comfortable chair or floor cushion
  • Soft throw blanket
  • Small side tables for coffee or tea
  • Good lighting (a floor lamp works great)
  • Basket with current readings

My own was made from a thrift store chair that cost $40, a blanket that I owned and a floor lamp for $15. This has become my favorite place in the house.

9. Plaid and Checkered Patterns

Plaid and Checkered Patterns

It’s the perfect fall decor. It is classic and cozy.

How to add plaid

  • Plaid throw blanket with red, orange or brown tones
  • Buffalo check pillow covers
  • Curtains or valances with plaids
  • The foot of the bed is a plaid-upholstered bench

Mix plaids with solid colors in order to avoid overpowering the space. One or two pieces of plaid is usually enough.

10. Upgrade your window treatments

Upgrade your window treatments

The heavier curtains will look cozy in the fall and also help to insulate as temperatures drop.

  • Velvet curtains with rich autumn colors
  • Thermal-lined drapes with warm neutrals
  • Heavier linens in terracotta or rust
  • Double-layered curtains (sheer and heavy)

A good curtain can also improve your sleep by blocking the early morning light. This is especially important as sunrise times are constantly changing.

11. Style your Nightstands for Fall

Style your Nightstands for Fall

Style your nightstands for the fall to tie everything together.

My nightstand formula

  • Small lamp with warm light
  • A seasonal candle
  • Small plants or dried flowers
  • You currently have a book
  • The decorative tray is a great way to organize your things

It should be both functional and beautiful. Make it beautiful and functional. You will see your nightstand in the mornings.

12. Remember the scent

Remember the scent

The power of scent is in creating atmosphere. Fall fragrances can instantly make your bedroom cozier.

Best fall bedroom scents:

  • Cinnamon apple
  • Vanilla and Amber
  • Pumpkin Spice (not too strong)
  • Cedarwood and sandalwood
  • Warm Vanilla and Nutmeg

Use linen sprays, candles or essential oil diffusers. It’s part of my cozy autumn ritual to lightly spray a vanilla linen spray on my pillows before going to bed.

Budget-Friendly Fall Decorating Ideas

Let’s face it – not everyone can afford to spend hundreds of dollars on seasonal décor. How to decorate your bedroom for fall on a budget

First, shop around your own home. You already have things that are perfect for the fall. You should look for items in warm tones, textures, and natural fabrics.

Secondhand and thrift stores. In the late summer and early autumn, thrift stores are a goldmine. Baskets, picture frames and vases are all good items to look for.

Make the most of what you have. You can make your own wreaths, print your own art or paint candle holders.

Textiles are the key. A new blanket or two pillow covers will transform an entire room for less than $50.

Nature is a great decor. Outside, you can find free decor. Collect pinecones and colorful leaves. Also, collect interesting branches.

Wait for sales. Target, HomeGoods and TJ Maxx begin to offer fall decor by mid-October. This is when I buy it for next year.

Common Fall Bedroom Decorating Mistakes You Should Avoid

Over the years, I’ve made many decorating mistakes. Here’s the opposite of what you should do:

Avoid going overboard when it comes to pumpkins. Two or three real pumpkins, whether they are fake or not, can be charming. 15 pumpkins make it look like the Halloween store has exploded.

Avoid too much darkness. The decor for fall should be warm and not gloomy. Darker colors should be balanced with lots of white, cream and natural light.

Comfort is more important than aesthetics. You may love the decorative pillows, but they’re too many if you throw them all over the floor at night.

Avoid the artificial cinnamon fragrance overload. You can get headaches from too much artificial fragrance.

Don’t overlook functionality. It is important that your bedroom functions as a place to sleep. Keep it from feeling cluttered.

Make Your Fall Bedroom Decor Last

What is the best thing about autumn bedroom decor? The majority of it can be used in the winter or even in early spring.

Neutral fall colours like olive, cream, camel and rust work all year round. Fall textures like chunky knits and faux fur are perfect for the colder months.

I usually keep my fall décor up until the New Year, swapping out obvious autumn elements such as pumpkins and orange accents with more winter-appropriate items.

Final Thoughts

It doesn’t take a lot of money or a complete room renovation to create a cozy bedroom for fall. Layering textures and warming up the color palette are key to creating a cozy fall bedroom.

Start by choosing one or two items from the list. Grab a chunky blanket in a warm tone and some pillows. Add candles and string lighting. You’ll soon have the cozy fall bedroom of your dreams.

The best bedroom will make you excited to return to it at the end of a long, hard day. Make your bedroom the space you want to retreat to at the end of a long day.
